*** FOR SALE: A RARE, HIGH-END, AMERICAN-MADE PIANO ***
A 2005 MASON & HAMLIN MODEL 50, PROFESSIONAL 50" TALL UPRIGHT PIANO WITH SOSTENUTO PEDAL!
ALL-NEW DESIGN; OAK FINISH. MADE IN HAVERHILL, MA.
The original Model 50 was a very good instrument, made from the 1960's to the late 1990's, with minor improvements over the years. But in the late 1990's, under new ownership, it was completely redesigned: an updated and much more attractive cabinet, longer keys for a more grand-like touch and improved pedal leverage, and an improved action assembly (comprised of the many internal moving parts). In the pictures below you can readily see how different the design is from a 1974 Model 50. This 2005 version has traditional wood action parts made by Mason & Hamlin, and the piano listed for about $18,000 new. The main difference between this and the current Model 50 is that the newer ones have an action assembly branded "Wendell, Nickel & Gross", which uses black carbon fiber parts in place of some of the wood ones. And it now lists for about $36,000. The two have a slightly different touch, but they sound very similar: both amazing! WNG used to be a separate company supplying actions to Mason & Hamlin, but Mason acquired them, so these actions are also made in-house. One feature that didn't change is the patented Tension Resonator: a heavy-duty steel turnbuckle on the back, which draws the sides together tightly, and prevents the crown of the soundboard from ever flattening out. The curvature of the soundboard, like the top of a violin, is what amplifies the sound of the strings. Another rare feature is the sostenuto pedal. Like the Steinway K-52 and the top-of-the-line Yamaha and Kawai uprights, this one a sostenuto function, which allows you to sustain any notes or chords, then overlaying unsustained notes. Most grands have a sostenuto function on the middle pedal, but you can't learn how to use it if you're practicing on an upright that lacks the feature.
Although it's still called "Model 50", this is now a highly-rated upright, comparable in quality to the Steinway Model K-52, with deep bass notes, a rich tone, and power to rival a grand piano. Mason & Hamlin is one of only 3 piano makes still manufactured in the USA (Haverhill, MA). Includes original matching bench.
CONDITION: MECHANICALLY AND COSMETICALLY LIKE NEW. All parts are original, but have minimal wear. One owner. It has had fairly light use.

MASON & HAMLIN PIANO CO. began building fine quality pianos in Boston in 1854. and is today one of the few piano makes still based in the USA and manufactured here. Their grand and upright pianos were, and still are, comparable to those of Steinway & Sons in many respects. Many people prefer the Model 50 to the Steinway K-52, the Yamaha U3, and Kawai uprights. If you search pianoworld.com or other on-line piano forums, you'll find many favorable comments on this model, by people who own one, and techs who've worked on them.
