FOR SALE: A RARE, LIMITED EDITION, HIGH-END YAMAHA 52" PROFESSIONAL UPRIGHT PIANO. RETRO ANTIQUE-STYLE CABINET, SATIN WALNUT VENEER, SPECIAL HIGH-GRADE HAMMERS, ETC.
1984 YAMAHA Model U300wn, "PREMIUM PROFESSIONAL SERIES" UPRIGHT PIANO. Full size: 52" tall. Rare, limited edition antique style cabinet with fancy trim and rounded corners. Premium-grade satin walnut veneer. This model was available briefly in the early 1990's, by special order, in Japan, but not in the USA. Although it is one of the best uprights ever made by Yamaha, it was rather expensive at the time, and not widely known or widely available, and was discontinued after a few years. Model U3 is much better-known, since it has been in continuous production for over 60 years, and has always been the top model stocked by most Yamaha dealers in the USA. The U3 has always been an exceptional instrument, as are all members of the "U " family, but it's not quite their top-of-the-line. The standard U300 was the version of the U3 sold in Japanese piano stores. The Model U300wn was a deluxe version of the U300, with a number of upgrades to the tone, the touch, and the style (see below). The models most comparable in quality to this, in Yamaha's current lineup, are the YUS3 and YUS5, which you can special-order for about $20,000, but it's no longer available in this cabinet style. As with the U3, the U7 was made in Japan for the North American market. Series A, serial # 3932651.
ADVANCED FEATURES OF MODEL U300wn, COMPARED TO THE STANDARD MODEL U3:
*RETRO ANTIQUE-STYLE CABINET.
*PREMIUM WALNUT VENEER w/satin finish.
*HIGHER-GRADE HAMMERS ("Yamaha W" series). The mahogany hammer heads create more power, and higher quality felt produces a better tone.
*SUPERIOR TONE to that of most older AND newer 52" models. Deep, resonant bass. Full, rich tenor section. Clear, bell-like treble. Not too bright, not too mellow.
STANDARD FEATURES OF YAMAHA U3 and U300 PIANOS:
The longest of the bass strings is roughly the same as that of a Yamaha 5' 8" grand. It comes as close as you can get to the sound of a Yamaha baby grand, in an upright. The bass is deep and loud; the tenor is rich and resonant; and the treble is clear but not overly bright. Made in Japan, as are Yamaha's best grand pianos. The legs are reinforced with toe blocks, so they're unbreakable. There are 3 solid brass pedals. The middle pedal engages a practice mode, which softens the tone and lowers the volume. If you want enhanced volume and clarity, the front half of the top lid can be propped partially open, or folded completely open onto the back half. The soundboard is solid spruce, not laminated. The U, W, and Y Series uprights have been very popular teaching instruments in schools and colleges for the past 50+ years. They are also among the models most often recommended by piano teachers for their students. They have long been a favorite of piano technicians, too, because they sound better, play better, hold up better, and require less maintenance in the long run, than most uprights. Ask anyone who knows pianos. New full-size Yamaha uprights range from $11,000 to $21,000 list price. Even at those prices, they're considered to be among the world's best pianos in their price range.
CONDITION: EXCELLENT OVERALL. One owner. It was never played much to begin with, so there is very minimal wear on the hammers, dampers, bushings, and other internal action components. The soundboard and bridges are perfect. Includes a matching bench; a key to lock down the keyboard cover; a felt dust cover for the keyboard, and the owner's manual.
RECENT SERVICE: Tuned to standard A440 tuning, and cleaned inside and out. Of equal importance, it has just been fully regulated. Regulation should be done once every few years, at least, to compensate for normal wear and tear, humidity changes, drying out of wood parts, and the passage of time. Regulation consists of the many adjustments and tweaks needed to keep the playing action smooth and even, and to keep the tone at its best: not too bright, not too muted, and consistent from key to key. Unfortunately, most piano owners eventually let their instrument get out of regulation, due to lack of use, and/or to avoid the extra expense involved in maintaining peak performance. Just like a car, your piano needs more than just a tune-up now and then.
