For Sale: A rare, high-end, professional-grade upright piano with the tone and the feel of a grand. Comparable to Yamaha's best!
1992 KAWAI MODEL US-6X PROFESSIONAL "UPRIGHT GRAND" PIANO. 52"H x 60"W x 26"D. Made in Japan. This was one of Kawai's top-of-the-line upright models produced that year. It weighs almost as much as a Kawai baby grand. The overall sound is similar to that of a baby grand, and the bass strings are actually as long as those on a 5' 8" grand. The front also resembles a grand: it has an extended nose and shoulders, plus a large music rack, instead of a 2" tall folding tray, to hold music books. There is a perforated screen hidden behind the music rack, allowing some of the sound to come out the front. It has 6 heavy duty back posts, instead of the usual 4 or 5. The hammers have mahogany cores instead of maple, for enhanced power. It has a tapered soundboard made of solid spruce.
The current Kawai model closest to this one is the K-800 ($26,695 list price). The US-6X is a step above Yamaha's standard 52" upright (the ever-popular Model U3). It's more similar to the high-end Yamaha YUS5 ($21,700 list price). With most piano dealers, new pianos like this are not stocked, and have to be special-ordered. Compared to the U3, this model is more decorative and has a warmer, richer tone. Like a grand piano, it has a lockable keyboard cover. And like a grand, you can raise the top lid fully or partially, if the room acoustics require more brightness and volume. One great feature not found on grand pianos it the practice pedal. If you lock the middle pedal into the practice position, it softens the tone and lowers the volume, so you can practice any time of day or night without disturbing anyone. Because of their limited production, premium-grade Kawai upright grand models are much harder to find than the standard 52" Kawai and Yamaha models.
CONDITION: Cosmetically like new. The mechanical condition is excellent. One owner, purchased from an authorized Kawai dealer. It has not had a great deal of use. There is very little wear inside, on the hammers, bushings, dampers, etc. The tuning pins hold nice and tight, so it stays in tune with no problem. There are no cracks in the soundboard, bridges, or other wood parts, and no signs of internal corrosion. Recently tuned to A440, and fully regulated. Sounds beautiful! Deep, resounding bass; a full, rich tenor section; a sparkling treble. The playing action and tone are both moderate, and very uniform. Includes a matching bench, a key to lock the keyboard cover, and a dust cover for the keys.
ABOUT KAWAI PIANOS: Founded over 90 years ago in Japan, Kawai is today one of the world's largest piano makers, whose quality is rated on par with Yamaha. Kawai is the 2nd largest piano maker in Japan next to Yamaha. But unlike Yamaha, Kawai's main business has always been focused on pianos and keyboard instruments. In addition to their own pianos, Kawai manufactures the Boston Piano line, designed by Steinway and Sons. For more information on Kawai, go to www.kawaius.com.
