Temporary Leak Mitigation Request – Water Heater Drain Pan Pump
I have a Rheem ProTerra heat pump water heater that appears to be leaking into the black drain pan beneath the unit.
Before replacing the water heater, I would like to install a temporary automatic drainage system to prevent further water accumulation and moisture damage in the basement.
I would like to have:
The existing white drain outlet on the black water heater drain pan connected to an automatic condensate/removal pump reservoir.
The pump should automatically activate when water enters the reservoir.
The discharge tubing should be routed to the existing washing machine drain standpipe.
The system should operate continuously to remove any water collecting in the drain pan.
The goal is to provide temporary leak management while obtaining a second opinion regarding whether the water heater tank itself requires replacement.
Please let me know:
Whether this installation is feasible,
What pump model you recommend (e.g., Little Giant or Liberty condensate pump),
Estimated labor and material costs,
Your earliest availability.
Important: The connection should be made to the white outlet on the black drain pan, not to the brass fitting on the water heater tank itself.
You can also add one sentence because of the mold smell:
There is now a musty/moldy odor in the basement due to the ongoing water accumulation, so I would appreciate an urgent assessment.
