Parent Aide Volunteers -- support a parent! (Hampshire County)

Parent Aide Volunteers

Help prevent child abuse and neglect

What do Parent Aide volunteers do?
Parent Aides receive training and then are matched with a parent who wants the service. They spend 3-5 hours a week supporting a parent in multiple ways including:
•	Raise the parent’s self-esteem and self-confidence
•	Assist parents to find resources for their families
•	Support positive parenting to prevent child abuse and neglect
•	Increase understanding of child development
•	Expand social contacts and reduce isolation
•	Help parents learn to help themselves

Who are volunteers?
Volunteers come from all walks of life and share a common interest in building a nurturing relationship with a parent in the community who needs support. Parent Aides can be parents, or not, working or retired.

Criteria for being a Parent Aide
Volunteers need to be at least 21 years of age, agree to attend bi-weekly group supervision at the agency, and be available to meet weekly with the parent. Volunteers must have a valid driver’s license, car insurance and access to a car. A background check is required. If you are caring, non-judgmental and a good listener, you can be a Parent Aide.

I am a member of Worlds Apart Games in Amherst, MA. We are a community run and organized Gaming store in the Pioneer Valley. We are the only Non-Profit gaming store in the country (possibly the world!). No one makes any money, and we all own the store. We have officers, Council and general members. Each works on a volunteer basis.

I have been asked to set up special events. I would like to discuss possibly having someone come in and do a game demo at the store. Since we are a community run and volunteer run store we would like someone to do a demo on a volunteer basis.

We would be willing to offer discounts or gift certificates to the store. However, I cannot make that call, I'm just setting stuff up!

Hi there,
I am initially looking for some help organizing a few upcoming events that are educational in nature and relate to the RideBuzz Ridesharing Program, which is a free community service. I am happy to get help on any level, but someone who could orchestrate and work with other volunteers would be fabulous.

The purpose of the events is to help get the word out into the community about the benefits of ridesharing in response to rising prices and climate change. There is a growing portion of our population that is getting ever more stressed with rising fuel prices - and the challenge of feeding their families.

Sharing rides can cut the gas bill and emissions in half!

Please call my cell at 978-394-3740; or email me at Jeff@RideBuzz.org; The website is www.ridebuzz.org

thank you for your help,
Jeff Brown
ps: if you are looking for something with less commitment, you can help put flyers up in places that will help get the word out - I would be happy to email you the flyer.

Will trade your review for FREE Spiritually Based Novel

Hello,

I am a newly published author. While I currently reside in Austin TX, I am originally from Western Mass (Northampton). I have just recently gotten my first novel added to the Amazon catalog. I have allotted a number of copies to give away free and, in order to drive interest, I am looking for volunteers to act as reviewers.

Book title: A Little Light Under the Sun
http://www.amazon.com/Little-Light-Under-Sun/dp/0979900603/ref=sr_11_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1213639815&sr=11-1

I think my book would appeal to a similar audience of readers as The Alchemist or The Shack and other works of allegorical fiction like those of C.S. Lewis, William Young, Paulo Coelho, John Bunyan, and others.

Having grown up in Western Mass, I'd love to give some free copies away to reviewers in that area...before I approach people in other areas of the country. I would be delighted to give you a complimentary copy for you to review if you would be willing. I'd expect nothing in return except your honest opinion, good or bad (if bad, its better to know now before I spend extra money publishing more books, yes?) I do ask that your review be posted on the Amazon website so others can read it as well. It would be ideal if you were an active purchaser of similar spiritual material on Amazon...as the links between your review and purchasing habits might help others, who would be interested, locate my book.

Anyhow, if you would like a copy to read and review on Amazon, please reply with a shipping address and I gladly will mail you one pronto. If I run out of copies I will delete this Craigslist ad.

Thanks
Matt Stein

PS...If you are the kind of person who enjoys electronic versions (and you are willing to save me some money!!!!) I can also email a PDF version of the book.

From the press release:
http://www.prlog.org/10073841-new-book-expounds-communication-with-god-in-daily-life.html

May 21, 2008 – A Little Light Under the Sun, by Matt Stein, is the powerful story of an ordinary person who stumbles across an extraordinary friend. It’s a testimony to how God willingly communicates with all of us, all the time, if we just decide to listen.

Matt Stein lays out a seemingly simple parable that is deceptively layered with God’s wisdom. Expounding its ideas in a gentle allegorical fashion, the story remains accessible for readers of all spiritual mindsets and religions.

Encouraging readers to give up searching the world around them for the truth about God, A Little Light Under the Sun instead advocates that the spiritually curious seek communication and knowledge directly from God. “Having God communicate directly with you is an experience like no other,” says the author. “My task was to paint a picture of what this approach might look, taste, sound, smell and feel like for anyone interested in trying. God is accessible and ready to communicate – in fact, usually He’s already been communicating and it’s just a matter of learning how to spot these treasures in your daily life.”

Amusing and easy to read, this 335 page parable, will both entertain its reader as well as aid him along his own spiritual journey. Simultaneously observer and participant, each reader becomes intricately woven into the narrator’s burgeoning relationship with God, resulting not only in a good read, but grafting and involving him in actual communication with God and pronouncing a blessing that will extend outward from the pages into the reader’s actual life.

“All are welcome to discern a little light under the sun!” is Matt Stein’s simple invitation.

Buyers are advised to buckle up and enjoy this spiritual edification ride. Never before has being blessed been so easy. Some may not even notice it happening but, as the author gleefully states, “Time flies when you're having fun...and if you have enough fun it flies away completely and is gone! Some will understand this; others will not.”

From back cover:

As you and I know, there are many kinds of darkness. Sometimes darkness comes quickly, descending on us like a great cloud, and threatening to swallow us up. Just as often though darkness sneaks up so slowly that we don’t even notice its arrival, not so much a thing of its own, but more a gradual fading of the light, a lantern’s wick slowly burning down and dimming with no new source of oil. Take heart! No matter how dark our room has become there is always a source of illumination available. It’s here, right now, even if it’s just one tiny flickering point of light, almost indistinguishable at the other end of the universe. However dim or distant it may appear, a way out is provided. This book is about that way out. It’s about finally deciding to investigate the pinpoint of light, about looking through that one shimmering portal into another world. It’s for those of us who have become curious about what waits outside, right around the corner, behind the curtain, just over the hill, eager to greet us should we take the time to look. Gather round, have a peek, all are invited to discern a little light under the sun.

About the Author:

Matt Stein was born in Western Massachusetts, grew up in a tiny country town of less than three hundred people, and spent the first twelve years of his life exploring the natural world around him with the only other child within five miles, his older brother. After absorbing the beautiful forests, dirt roads, streams and mountains, he was moved to a larger city where he attended a series of good schools. He adored math and science, earned a degree in Philosophy from the University of Massachusetts, and was a staunch atheist until the thirty-first year of his life. He now resides in Austin Texas with his wife and two sons where he atones for his atheism by examining his world, thoughts, and memories with the goal of capturing in writing, even a fragment of the wonderful internal experiences he has mercifully been given. By the grace of God he is now both treasure hunter and author.

Peru 109 is a small, family run organization based in Vermont that leads volunteer programs exclusively in the country of Peru. Co-directors Anne (USA) and Juan Carlos (Peru) design the Peru 109 trips with the goal of not only facilitating community changes for the better, but also encouraging Peruvians to be active in initiating and maintaining community growth.

Perhaps you have already had the opportunity to try out your teaching skills. Or, maybe you're a first-timer as head of the classroom.
In mid-August scholarship students from Afghanistan, Kenya, Philippines will arrive and we need host families. This U.S. Government funded scholarship program (Youth Exchange and Study or YES) was created after the tragic events of September 11th. The program aims to build mutual understanding between the U.S. and countries with significant Muslim populations. It works. I've seen the impact these kids have on their host communities and have witnessed their determination to institute change when they return home.

The scholarships are highly competitive, identifying the students with the strongest English skills, leadership skills and ability to adapt in a new culture. PAX - Program of Academic Exchange and American Councils for International Education are the two agencies administering these scholarships. The kids are amazing and are extremely motivated to make the most of their year in the U.S. My group of 17 students this year (see photo below) has done 100's of presentations sharing their culture and have completed over 2,000 hours of volunteer work. One boy initiated an ambitious project to raise money for a library in Afghanistan and has raised approx. $30,000. They're great kids and hosting them is a great experience! Please contact me for more information and visit these links:
I would love to find a family with young children for a boy named Asadullah from Afghanistan. He lives with his widowed mother and, in addition to being a driven and determined student, is the primary breadwinner for the two of them. I would love for him to experience the childhood that the Taliban stole from him. He's had too much responsibility for such a young person and deserves the simple joy of building snowmen, carving pumpkins and other small pleasures that we take for granted. Asadullah enjoys soccer, computers, singing and hiking.

Miranda from the Philippines enjoys participating in school plays - especially musicals. She also likes to sing, read, play badminton and is active in school clubs. She has a great sense of humor and the cutest dimples. She wants her host family to know “If you will choose me to be a member [of your] family I can assure you that you will have no problem with me, because I level my best to meet your expectations… I know by being your host student I will learn many things from you and I will treasure these valuable lessons.”

Please open your hearts and homes to one of these deserving young scholars - the future leaders of our world.
