I am leaving before Thanksgiving (26th at around 5pm), to drive to Southern, NY. My family lives in Rockland County, in a location which is 40 minutes from NYC, and five minutes from a train which takes you into the New York Penn Station (west side of the island, trains ACE and quick shuttle from Times Square to Grand Central, which would get you to the 456 and 7). The train appears to be operating under a special schedule, but there are plenty of trains available, and the ticket costs between $4 and $7.50, one-way, the higher fare being when you may have transfer at Seacaucus (which is highly likely but extremely easy, just don't lose your ticket).
I am willing to give folks a ride for $10 (cash, upfront please) to any points along the route I will be taking (91S then to CT-15/Merritt Parkway to NYS Thruway). Springfield, Berlin CT, Hartford, Westport, Westchester (I can drop you off in Tarrytown for another train if you would like, around $7.50, straight to Grand Central), Nyack, Spring Valley, all the way to Suffern, where my parents live. The trip takes three hours from Northampton, with probably a little more time added on, though I'm not sure about traffic. I can't imagine from this direction it would be that bad, maybe a little tough around Hartford.
I'm coming back on Saturday, leaving at around 9AM from Suffern, and would be able to pick up folks along all of the aforementioned points, or pick you up from either the Suffern or Tarrytown train stations. This would be $5, unless I didn't drive you down, so it would be $10.
I will have room for 2-3 people, depending on luggage, and I am only willing to take students. I'm 23, non-smoker, female... virtually non-threatening, you should be too.
I will pick up people from Noho, Easthampton, Hadley, and Amherst, as well as anyone who lives along 91 towards Springfield.
