Gossen manufactured this light meter for Paillard in 1964.

It was calibrated for the shutter speeds of the REX cameras and measured both reflected and incident light.

It used a PX-13 battery and had a sensitivity of 6 to 1600 ASA, with settings for camera speeds from 12-24 frames per second and variable shutter openings.

All H model cameras manufactured after 1962 contained an accessory attachment shoe located above the turret; the side of the Gossen meter was designed to fit into this slot.

Here's how the NEW YORK TIMES reviewed the camera in June of 1988!!!

The new Olympus Infinity SuperZoom 300 takes an even more sophisticated tack. It can be set to take either head-and-shoulders or full-figure portraits of people automatically. Point the SuperZoom 300 at someone, and the lens starts zooming back and forth until it finds the proper size. When it does, the camera gauges exposure and focus, and then takes the picture.

So how does an unthinking chunk of plastic, metal and electronic parts know when it's looking at the head and shoulders of a human being? Simple answer: it doesn't. It merely assumes that whatever appears in the center of the finder is a person, and it uses its auto-focusing capability to judge the subject's distance from the lens. A built-in computer program does the rest. The one limitation is the lens's zoom range; the head-and-shoulders ''portrait mode'' only works between 4 and 10 feet.

Besides zooming automatically, the SuperZoom 300 sports plenty of other upscale features. There's a built-in flash that zooms when the lens does, plus a provision for fill-in flash. There's a ''servo'' auto-focus mode, which basically means that the lens keeps focusing as long as your finger is on the shutter button. And the metering system can be set to take either center-weighted or spot readings.

You'd think from all this that Olympus has produced yet another auto-focusing, single-lens reflex, but you'd be wrong. Despite its fancy capabilities, under its skin the SuperZoom 300 is a point-and-shoot camera. Like other point-and-shoots, but unlike SLRs, its viewing system is separate from the lens. More to the point, you can turn it on and use it in automatic fashion without having to know anything about portrait modes, servo focusing or spot metering.

However, the camera does verge on being SLR-like in its automatic focusing system. Unlike the run-of-the-mill, point-and-shoot, it does not project an infrared beam to measure distances. Instead, like advanced, auto-focusing SLRs, it has an internal contrast detector that does the job. The result is a quantum leap in focusing accuracy, although it may not be apparent in the average snapshot.

The SuperZoom is compact, light and looks good. It has a zoomy ''aero'' shape that borrows as much from video cameras as it does from SLRs. The primary controls, such as they are, fall neatly under the fingers when the camera is hoisted to the eye. The right index finger takes care of the shutter release, and the left index finger works the motorized, wide-to-tele zoom control. Exposure is adjusted by the camera's electronic innards according to the focal length selected.

The XA capsule camera was launched in 1979. It was fitted with a barrier-type lens cover that eliminated the need for a case.

It had a 28mm wide-angle lens and was also capable of macro photography at a minimum distance of 30cm.

Extremely portable and ready to shoot at a moment's notice, this superb compact camera also incorporated a range of sophisticated features, including a built-in rangefinder and aperture-preferred AE.

There was also an externally mounted strobe flash unit designed to harmonize with the XA body.

The XA was the first full-featured camera in which plastic materials were used for the body and other key parts. Olympus upgraded its plastic molding system and established new technologies to produce this camera.

I have never had a complaint about the camera, what it can do, or how it works. I've taught many classes using this camera as the main camera for the students, and they all loved it. Trust me, if you buy this camera, it's well worth the price and you won't regret it one bit.

Strengths:

Quickly focuses to take the shot no matter how much movement there is in the frame. Each picture comes out perfectly. The flash is great, not too bright, and it brings the right amount of light to the picture. Black and white film works great in this camera. Works well with all kinds of lenses.

Weaknesses:

None that I can think of.

Similar Products Used:

I have used Minolta and Canon brand cameras and none even come close to compare with this model of Nikon.
