New weekly alternative meditation group - Pioneer Valley Dharma Punx (Hadley)

A new meditation group has formed for people who haven't been able to find a way into meditation that works for them.

The group:
-is peer-led (we are all equals, here to support one another),
-includes instructions on meditation along with discussions that change weekly,
-welcomes any experience level or tradition,
-is supported by dana (the Pali word for generosity). A donation of $7 is requested but not required. Give what you can when you can.
-is based on the concepts created by Noah Levine, author of "Dharma Punx" and "Against the Stream".

For people who are enchanted by Afro-Cuban rhythms and dances we are offering ongoing classes in Afro-Cuban Folkloric Dance. Join us as we learn a variety of Orisha dances from the Santer�a/Yoruba/Lucum� tradition; Bant� dance from the Palo complex; and social dances such as Rumba and Comparsa.

Each class includes a warm-up; instruction in basic movements; creation of choreographies out of the basic steps; and discussion of the historical and cultural roots of the various Afro-Cuban dances. The highlight of each week's class is the traditional dance circle where each dancer takes a turn to put what he or she has learned into practice by dancing before the drums.

These high energy classes are accompanied by a battery of live drummers from Grupo Folkl�rico Palo Santo playing authentic Afro-Cuban instruments and rhythms; and singing traditional Afro-Cuban songs.

These ongoing classes are open to dancers of all different ability and experience levels. No previous formal dance training is necessary. Newcomers are always welcome.

Do you love to play Scrabble? Would you like to meet up with other folks and share a source of enjoyment? We do! Maybe you don't have folks to play with often enough. Maybe you are better than the rest of your family, and want a harder challenge!

We offer a chance to play Scrabble against others who love the game. We have fun members who really enjoy meeting new players. There are many different levels of players who join us at any given meeting, from "I've only played with my family" to folks who play in tournaments regularly. We'll try to match you up with other folks around your level, and if you want, we'll help you to improve your game.

We meet every Monday, but you don't have to attend every week. Our first game starts at 5:30, but feel free to join us 6:15 P.M. for the second game. Later games start at 7:00, 8:00, and sometimes 9:00. Come for any one game or stay for the whole evening, or anything in between.

We meet in the Community Room of Burger King, located at 344 King St., in Northampton. The Community Room is at the back of the building, accessible through the front. There is a $1 suggested "dues," but that is waived the first time you join us.

I am an educational consultant with Usborne Books and if you aren't familiar with our books we carry award winning educational yet fun reading material for children. We have books for all ages, infant through junior high and topics of interest for everyone.

I am currently looking for groups that would be interested in taking part in a reading incentive challenge called Reach for The Stars. E-mail me for the details but basically each child is asked to read a set number of minutes in a two week period and to collect pledges from their friends and family. 100% of the pledge money goes back to the group in the form of books.

This program is great for elementary aged children but can work with younger children who will have parents read to them instead of doing all the reading themselves. Homeschoolers usually enjoy this program since many homeschool curricula use our books and what better way to get them than for FREE?

This program is of course held for your group at no charge and I basically do all the work. If you are part of a group, or know of one that may be interested, please e-mail me for more information. Some groups that have taken the reading incentive challenge with our company in the past include scouts, little league (and other team sports), homeschool groups, school groups, church groups, etc. Together we can promote literacy among the youth of today!
