Afro-Cuban Folkloric Dance Class (Northampton, MA)

For people who are enchanted by Afro-Cuban rhythms and dances we are offering ongoing classes in Afro-Cuban Folkloric Dance. Join us as we learn a variety of Orisha dances from the Santer�a/Yoruba/Lucum� tradition; Bant� dance from the Palo complex; and social dances such as Rumba and Comparsa.

Each class includes a warm-up; instruction in basic movements; creation of choreographies out of the basic steps; and discussion of the historical and cultural roots of the various Afro-Cuban dances. The highlight of each week's class is the traditional dance circle where each dancer takes a turn to put what he or she has learned into practice by dancing before the drums.

These high energy classes are accompanied by a battery of live drummers from Grupo Folkl�rico Palo Santo playing authentic Afro-Cuban instruments and rhythms; and singing traditional Afro-Cuban songs.

These ongoing classes are open to dancers of all different ability and experience levels. No previous formal dance training is necessary. Newcomers are always welcome.

I recently adopted a rescued dog and we've been doing lots of walking and exploring new parks and hiking trails, and she always surprises me how much she loves walking and being outdoors... she can easily walk 1-2 miles. Since she's a rescued dog, she loves it when she sees other dogs but often gets nervous around them, especially the big ones, and starts barking until she gets used to being around them. So, to help her with her socialization skills, I'd love to have her meet other small dogs, preferible, but medium dogs are okay too. Would you like to join us? She is 3 years old, a bichon-poodle mix, up to date with all her shots, and neutered. About me: I'm a graduate student, 30-something, and work as an educator.

You don't need to lose weight and get in shape - you might be there already, but I'd like to find someone willing to call me out about the chocolate, set and meet exercise challenges with me, and generally help me out.

From the center of Northampton Head west on RT-9 towards Smith College Turn Left at Green St/RT-66 .8mi Continue to follow RT-66 (Green St. turns into Prince St) Leave Rt-66 and bare right to Continue on Prince St .2mi Continue on Burts Pit Rd .2mi Entrance for Parcel C is on left across from the Community Gardens. (if you get to the dog park on the right you�ve gone to far.

The ball that we use isn't actually a "softball," but it is soft. We use a "squish-ball" which looks and feels like a baseball, We pitch overhand but it's soft so that no one gets hurt. It's way fun. You should come.
Please bring any gloves and/or bats that you have. (wooden bats only please)
If you don't have a glove come anyway, we will be sharing gloves with people that don't have them
Oh yea, bring snacks, and beverages of any kind:) for yourself and/or others.

Howdy folks!

When I read Paul's description of the game Squish Baseball here on CL last Saturday morning, I thought: "I am SO there!" Even with gas prices being as stupid as they are I took the drive on Rt 9 from Pittsfield to Noho to play. I had a frikkin' blast! I felt like a 40 year old kid. As an added bonus, I had the pleasure of meeting about a dozen incredibly nice people and a really charming dog who was a little confused as to the whole "no dogs on the playing field" concept.

Yesterday, (Sunday) and today, I am feeling every single one of the 40 years that I mentioned earlier. - I am sore in places that make me want to take a blistering hot bath for about a year and stay drunk the whole time.

But it was worth it and I'm totally doing it again next Saturday. If you're reading this and you've read Paul's post descibing the game of Squish Baseball but didn't come out, get thee to the squishball field! If you're passionate about any game where defense has the ball, we want to hear from you...

Our goal this week is to bring a friend each which would double things meaning an actual game. Nine on nine. That would be unassailably cool! Check the CL post from June 2 titled Squish Baseball (Northampton) for particulars on the game itself as well as directions to the field. It's a great way to spend a Saturday afternoon. Game on at 2 but come early if you want to throw/stretch/warm up. If you're a baseball freak like me, the minute the first pitch is thrown you'll be treated to a rush that I can only describe as a big league feel on a little league field. Hope to see you there!

Fourteen high school students form Japan will be visiting the area Thursday, July 10 and leaving Sunday, July 20. Host families are needed - all that is required is a bed in a room with the same gender child, meals, and conversation. The students are involved in English classes and activities 7 hours a day, and spend evenings and the weekend with their host families.

Benefits include friendship with teens across the world, breaking down of stereotypes, and a new appreciation of our valley!

Teach Me to "Rack and Roll" on the PVTA (Northampton)

I'm a relatively new bike-for-travel-rather-than-recreation person and I'd love to try the PVTA Rack and Roll system so I could ride my bike to the bus stop and then take the bus to UMass (where I work). However, I'm not sure how it works and I couldn't find anything online about what to do with your bike, Rack and Roll etiquette, etc.

Is anyone out there interested in taking me on my maiden Rack and Roll voyage? We could ride our bikes to a stop, take the bus, and maybe grab a beverage or something somewhere along the way (my treat to thank you).

I'm not looking for grand romance on the PVTA or anything like that. Just someone to show me the ropes (and if a friend is made in the process, great).

I'm a 31 year old woman with an arsenal of transporation/traffic trivia and a good sense of humor to entertain us while we go.
